Ominous Tuesdays

I tried to run this morning, but the pus spewing wound was too painful. I sat in the hot tub some, reenacted portions of the Battle of Midway in it and stretched.

I went home for lunch and noticed that someone stole my zuchini from the refrigerator or moved it. The following email exchange occurred between my roommate and I:

Matt---Someone stole my zuchini. I'm on to you. I'll find you. I'll track you
down. Don't mess with my zuchini.

I will refrain from putting eggshells in the disposal even though I
feel that if I can quickly chew egg shells up in my mouth a garbage
disposal should be able to do it. That's what tough guys do in their
spare time, they chew eggshells and dress metro.

Gina-- Did you check the drawers in the fridge?...I had to make space when I
bought all of my food for dinner on Saturday night and some things may
have been stuffed in random places. Sorry about that...I know that boys
aren't the best at finding things, so I'd be happy to dig around there
for you when I get home if you'd like :)

Matt--No I didn't check anywhere. In fact, I could care less about the
zuchini. I just noticed that it was previously co-located with my red
bell pepper, both of which I bought on some sort of lark that I needed
to eat more vegetables and then quickly decided once I got home that
that would be a waste of time. The zuchini and bell pepper are now
separated. I only used it as an excuse to make ominous threats, which
I feel compelled to do on some Tuesdays.

"Hey Matt, you wanna go see this movie with us tonight?"

"Oh YOU'LL be sorry about that!"

"What?" they ask with quizzical expressions.

"OH YEAH! You what me again and we'll see.........."

Shitty Sundays

I woke up in a foul mood, probably something to do with Saturday's events. I ended up losing my ATM, canceling, and of course I have subsequently found it. I went to Terra Linda to swim, busted out 2800 yards which I'm pretty happy with given that I haven't been swimming much. I was angry at myself because I decided not to go do a 30 mile run that morning in Big Basin Redwood Park. Turns out it's a good thing I did not.

After my swim I did a 2.5 hour run on Tam. I think the sun got to me even though I was running with two water bottles filled with junk, which is more than I normally go with. I ran with no shirt on because it feels good and so that women could smile in wild wonder at the joy that they had found (my naked torso--a friend called me Leonidas. Compliments like that are what this fragile ego needs. All day. All night).

I developed a massive blister that got infected and leaves me limp and lame. It was spewing white chunky pus blocks like cottage cheese and it was free flowing. I grew concerned as to the source of it. How much cottage cheese could I have in me? Turns out a lot. I finally cut the puppy open, giddy at having a new wound to play with. I cleaned it out and put neosporin on it. By noon the next day it dried up, but it is still tender.

I didn't even get a very good tan.

Accident

I went for my first bike ride in almost a year on Saturday. A 50 miler or so leaving from Woodside and up Kings Mountain Road. I rode pretty well considering I was hung over. One of our riders had a serious fall and sustained extensive injury to his head, but I believe he will be ok in the long run.

I was tired that night. Ate food cooked by my roommate Gina, and tried not to creep out her two good looking girlfriends that came over.

Drinking Friday

I didn't do a damn thing athletically except sit in the sauna. I didn't feel like working either so at 3:30 I bought the office Irish Coffees and quickly realized I wanted a lot more Irish Coffees. Davie's B-day consumed that night, which I spent drinking at Le Colonial. These pics are the best my iphone can manage, but somehow it captures the night perfectly. What is not shown is Matthew dancing the whitest white man dance I've ever seen. Think Girl Next Door dropping acid dancing without the good looking girl. Now, I must add, there was a little blonde vixen that somehow Davie knew from previous encounters. No details on that. He picked her up and looked like he was going to throw her. After she left it went downhill. Matthew was trying to high five the DJ, Tim was trying to wrestle Matthew (better luck after a bit of crossfit) and Andy was laughing, but not for long. Andy drove Matthew home and chose the perfect vehicle to remain inconspicuous in.

Thursday

6 mile 2pm run.

Max Thruster - 155
21-15-9 of:
Burpees
Knees to Elbows
Box Jumps.

I was gassed from the squats on Wednesday and from all the wine I drank on Wednesday night at this super cool wine tasting.

Squats

Tried to do 21x185, but only got to 10 and then did broken sets until I got to 33 and pulled/strained my groin. Then I stopped. Squats puts the hurt on. I'm shooting for 21x225 within 10 weeks.

Jackie

Tuesday

Ran about 8 miles total today. First 6 were out along the Embarcadero up Coit Tower over to Broadway and back. Then I did a 6 min mile on the treadmill and another mile at about 7:30.

Crossfit
At the 6pm (23 people!) we did Jackie which is:

1000M row
50 thrusters (45lb bar)
30 pullups

For time: 7:30
I was bested by Travis who did it in 7:11. If I had that as a target I could probably make it, but that's competition. Great workout. I could taste the lactate from the workout in my mouth.

Walt Whitman
Finished up the American Experience program on Walt Whitman who wrote like two books but revised one of them, Leaves of Grass about 2400 times, adding and detracting things. Great program. I can't read poetry and connect with it, but this program had scholars reading it, as poetry is meant to be received, and relating it to the things Whitman had intended. Fascinating stuff. Fascinating life. Whitman intended for all Americans to feel connected with one another. This program definitely succeeded in portraying that and portraying the connectivity of individuals in an urban environment, that despite the strangeness of one another, we're really quite close to one another. Probably why they call him the American poet.

Whitman spent the years during the Civil War tending to patients in hospitals in Washington DC. The program read portions of his poetry written about this time and presented images of wounded, disabled, and amputated soldiers from both the Civil War and the current wars as the scholars read his poetry. This led me to think of the people I amputated and treated over there. Unpleasant work, but I miss it. I think Whitman found something to connect with through the work. It brought him closer to people.

Tabata Run, Back Squat, Cleaning

Monday

So I actually made it to the club in the morning for the first time on a Monday since 1923. Rather than swim, I decided my running needs more work as I am doing this ridiculous 50 mile race in a few weeks and contemplating running up and down the Pacific Crest TRail later in the summer. Why? I don't know.

Tabata Treadmill Run
---Open challenge to anyone to do this with me
12% grade
10 mph
20 seconds on
10 seconds off
Do this 8 times for a total of 4 minutes (or 3:50 if you're really getting technical)
--You pretty much have to get the rat ramp up to speed while standing on the side of the thing and then lift yourself on it and let go as soon as your legs are moving fast enough. Same thing to get off. It takes too long to play with the speed buttons for your rest period.
--This is a brutal workout, but I feel like I'm getting used to it. Going to up the speed a bit.

After the tabata run I did some back squats. Warmed up and then did 3x3@185 lbs. This is just weak weak weak. I could say that the tabata run tired me out, but excuses will not be tolerated. I want to get back to doing 21 straight reps at 185 so I can work on getting 21 straight reps of 225. Back squatting is my enemy.

That evening I went to crossfit where after doing the insanely long warmup, we did:

3 squat cleans @ 95 lbs.
3 box jumps
4 burpees
fence run

we did the above five times, but the reps for the cleans and box jumps went 3-6-9-12-15. Everything else stayed the same (as in the burpees and fence run were constant).

I was tired from this day of fun. I got beat by three people in the above workout, which kind of fired me up in my own self composed fired up but nobody else can really tell fired up sort of way. I then watched a documentary about Walt Whitman.

Too cold to train

Sunday

I really had no desire to leave the house. Frankly, nobody could offer me any reason to grace their presence and all workouts I could contemplate bored me. I put my computrainer together and then decided I would go do a tabata run set on the treadmill combined with intense hot tub action. As I drove to the club, I changed my mind, turned around, and set up the computrainer outside. Spun for about 45 minutes. Felt very strong working at my old intervals VT1-280 watts and VT2-350 watts. I'm sure those have changed having not ridden in a year. I did 3x5 mins at VT1 and then 1 min at VT2 just to see if it was hard. It actually felt so easy that I was worried the thing wasn't working. Definitely thinking about getting back into some racing next year. I should have followed with a run, but again the weather was nasty and I had to remind myself that I'm not doing anything I find unpleasant.

I saw 21 that night. It was mildly entertaining, but I have to say, the main character is a pretty big wimp the way he let people walk all over him (including Laurence Fishburne, who I would have buried in the Las Vegas desert along with whoever owned that hotel. And if I ever let someone as mousy as Kevin Spacey get the better of me I will just choke myself out--he should just go back to playing a serial killer). The main character did hook up with the girl in the movie, of course, but apparently she had to take a bunch of shots of alcohol before doing their "love" scene if you can even call it that. All they did was stand in front of a window overlooking Vegas and play cheesy movie music. I think the guy touches her face and perhaps they kiss and then it's done. I dunno, maybe I would have to take a few shots to let little creepy dude from MIT touch me too.

And I'm not sure why they need people from MIT to count cards. Seemed to me like they needed less emotional people.

After rereading my post I have decided I am weak.

Hungover Dipsea Run

Saturday

Ran to Cardiac Hill and back. Nice out. Hills protected us from the wind. 8.54 miles. No intensity whatsoever here. Kind of a waste of time. Running on 2 hours of sleep. Went to Sams afterwards and that also was protected from the wind and the sun was good. So were the smoothies.

Cold

Friday

Swam a lap in Acquatic Park at noon for Mr. George Barry's birthday followed by lunch at Capurros. I truly wish the water would warm up just a bit because right now it's difficult to talk when I get out my face gets so cold. I love swimming out there though.
Probably about a mile swim.

Overhead and Other

Thursday--not sure about the date. If you have a calendar, use it.

We warmed up and did 3 rounds of overhead squats with 115lbs. Max reps for each round. I went 10-8-9.

We then did:

2 fence runs (300 meters), 20 kettleball swings (53lb), 20 pushups
2 fence runs, 12 swings, 12 pushups
1 fence run, 10 swings, 10 pushups
1 fence run, 8 swings, 8 pushups

The runs definitely were to my advantage but people would catch me on the swings. I don't know if I have a longer distance to travel or if I don't stop/start fast enough.

I think I went out drinking afterwards. If I didn't, I should have.

Gridley

10 Clean + Jerks @ 135lbs.
(5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 15 squats) x 5
10 Clean and Jerks @ 135lbs.
(5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 15 squats) x 5
10 Clean and Jerks @ 135lbs.

Time: 13:40

Still a bit tired from the marathon on Saturday.

Meant to go swim followed by a tabata run on the treadmill. Grabbed my alarm at 5am and fell back into a deep sleep until 7 and raced to the office to make a phone call in time.

I'd like to do the 100 overhead squats for time soon.

Dead Tired Deadlifting

Saturday was the 5:52 marathon from hell on Mt. Diablo. Aptly named.

Sunday was me drinking beers in the backyard.

Monday I went climbing at Mission Cliffs.

Tuesday I ran 7 in the morning and did crossfit that night. 21-15-9 of 225lb. deadlift followed by pullups. No problem with this workout but I was very very slow. It took me 8:37. Aaron Dial, my partner in the workout, had to wait for me. I feel like my pullups are lacking.

Not The Fastest Marathon

On Saturday, April 12th I did the Mt. Diablo Trail Marathon. Hosted by Pacific Coast Trail Runs, there was a 50 mile option and the marathon. I elected to "only" do the marathon. I wasn't feeling that great the morning of. I didn't feel like I slept adequately even though I went to bed at 10pm and awoke around 5am in order to eat and drive over to Clayton for a 7am start.

This race is brutal. The temperatures got up to 90 degrees by early afternoon. The total elevation gain was 7600'. That's almost 3 miles of up and down. The run took me 5:52 and it was more like an adventure race than a marathon.

Hardest run I have ever done. Longest event I have ever done by time. On the positive I never cramped up but I got really dehydrated despite drinking more than I ever have before. The last few miles where it was flattest and I actually had the legs to run I was trying not to throw up and go to the hospital. I could have passed a lot of people at the end, so it was a good learning experience. If I had known that there was no aid station for the last 8 miles I would have carried two bottles (this was my first time carrying a bottle).

Quicksilver will be interesting.

My legs feel fine and after drinking over 4 liters of water throughout the rest of Saturday I finally went to the bathroom.
